Unveiling a Monument
\nto Commemorate the War Veterans in Askola.

\nA Group of our Club members, the lions Ara Antin (left), Hannes Bjurstr\u00f6m, Hannu Rantanen and Olavi Kortej\u00e4rvi planned and built together this Monument in the Church Garden of Askola.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n


\nOn the National War Veterans Day, April 27th, a brand-new Veterans Monument was unveiled in Askola.
\n<\/span>
\nThe monument is built to honor the so called Lottas, ie. women, who in war time were supporting in the home fronts all the soldiers out in the front lines.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Without their substantial aid the success of the Finnish army would not have been possible. Only because of their assistance, the solders could be sent from their ordinary civil jobs out to the front lines.
\n<\/span>
\nIn the years 1939-1945 all together 767 men from Askola participated as soldiers in the war.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today we have just only three veterans left in Askola, two men and one female. They have all been awarded by the President of Finland, two of them got their medals finally in the festivities in Askola today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The whole nation is very grateful to all our War veterans. Lions Club Askola was active – in co-operation with our local Veterans association – to establish this Monument.<\/span><\/p>\n

It will remind us and all future generations to come of the great sacrifices of our Veterans, who granted Finland its Independence through their work during the utmost difficult time of World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n

LIONS CLUB ASKOLA\u00a0 – a brief club introduction<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Community and Club<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Askola is a small rural municipality some 60 kilometers eastwards from Helsinki<\/a>, the capital of Finland. Our municipality has about 5000 inhabitants. Our club has also members from neighboring Pukkila, another small, but active rural municipality with slightly over 2000 inhabitants. Most municipalities in Finland – there are still well over 300 of them – are small like ours. Reasonable or not, but this has to be seen as an expression of the Finns being true individuals, who are very skeptic about all kinds of bureaucracy!
\nOur neighboring city in the south is the coastal city of Porvoo<\/span><\/u><\/a> on Gulf of Finland.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our Club was chartered in 1961 and has currently 40 members of whom 4 belong to the Fellowship of Melvin Jones. The main activities of our club have mostly been focused on youth and elderly. Our meetings in the period 2021-2022 are taking place in Prestbacka Manor.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Activities<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lions Quest-training programs for school teachers and parents have been financed by our club as well as scholarships for international youth exchange. Drug abuse has become a problem among the youth also in our small rural communities similar to the unfortunate trends all over Europe. Our club is committed to tackle this problem and we have been financing our Lions Quest-program by arranging annually church concerts with great success.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover elderly people have received rehabilitation appliances making their daily life easier and preventing premature hospitalization. Additionally we have arranged transports to various events for elderly people as well as supported war veterans in their own activities.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Internationally we participated in the last world wide Sight First-campaign with a considerable contribution for an eye clinic in Equador. The years 2007-2008 were again new Sight First-campaign years and Lions Finland established an eye clinic in Sri Lanka with the money raised. Lions world wide are dedicated to sight and are therefore often called ”the Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”!
\nSeveral nation wide so called Red Feather-campaigns <\/span><\/span>have been carried out since the 1970ties for various purposes like prevention\/research of cancer, heart diseases or rehabilitation of elderly. In the year 2006 a new nation wide Red Feather-campaign was performed with a target to raise 1 Euro per every citizen in the country. The clubs all over the country worked hard to achieve this ambitious target by the end of the year 2006. Our club had a share and target of 5600 euros\u00a0 to fulfill. Our club doubled this target and we achieved again – of course – a leading position in the competition with other clubs in our zone!\u00a0The purpose of the campaign this time was to support children and youth.
\n\"punainen_sulka_1917-2017_netti_jpg-jpg-150x150\"Last<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Red Feather campaign<\/a> took place\u00a0in the years 2016-2017 again to\u00a0support the youth. It was again a great success and our club exceeded its target on this joint centennial campaign of all lions clubs in Finland. The youth center in Askola will at least get a brand new billiard table with our campaign income.

The Ladies of LC Askola have two foster children – whose educations are sponsored by the club – in Sri Lanka. They are hard-working pupils improving well in their studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
